UFC 113: Kimbo Slice – Can He Regain Another Glory?

Kevin Ferguson a.k.a. Kimbo Slice will fight with fellow TUF fighter Matt Mitrione, his first official heavyweight fight in the UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun, May 7, 2010. The King of the Web Brawlers - a title that the Rolling Stone had given him (because of his famed street fights that are spread in the Internet) will take another test in another turf, to regain his lost glory since the day that he was the star fighter of the now bankrupt EliteXC. This match will be exciting and full of action that is expected between these explosive and aggressive heavyweights.

Slice first taste of glory was when he was the star of the now defunct EliteXC. That time he was trained by former UFC Champion Bas Rutten, the man illustrated in the older day logo of UFC, and by boxing instructor Randy Khatami at Rutten’s school, Elite MMA. He has defeated Olympic gold medalist boxer Ray Mercer with a guillotine choke at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 5 which was his first MMA debut last June 23, 2007.  After signing the deal with the EliteXC formerly ProElite defeated Bo Cantrell by submission (punches) at EliteXC: Renegade on November 10, 2007, Tank Abbott by KO (punches) at EliteXC: Street Certified on February 16, 2008 and James Thompson by TKO (punches) at EliteXC: Primetime on May 31, 2008. And that sent Kimbo Slice into MMA Stardom, probably the most famous MMA Heavyweight in the planet.

The beginning of the end of Kimbo’s down fall was when he fought Seth Petruzelli. Slice was supposed to fight Ken Shamrock at the main event of EliteXC: Heat on October 4, 2008 but Shamrock withdrew having received a cut to the left eye during a warm-up just only hours before the fight. Say what?  Eventually the replacement Petruzelli defeated Kimbo via T.K.O. just 14 seconds into the first round. It was not just a great loss not just for Kimbo but also for the EliteXC who’s depending on the sales of the fight on their Superstar Fighter.  Slice took $ 500,000 in that fight.

Kimbo’s life took another stumble as the EliteXC ceased to operate. And after that took another stumble again when he opted to compete in The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights, where he lost his first fight via K.O. to veteran fighter and eventual series winner Roy Nelson. Two straight losses have put this street brawler in the position of a doubt, where his ability was questioned whether he could still make another UFC fight.  But this man can’t be put down; he rallied, and on his UFC debut, defeated Houston Alexander by a unanimous decision in The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights finale last December 5, 2009, in a fight where many UFC fans thought would not leave round 1.

Now Kimbo will be tested again by Matt Mitrione. Will Kimbo win? Can a rematch with Roy Nelson lead Kimbo into new stardom in a new turf with a new beginning? He has proven it, he has trained hard and maybe he can pull another star in his pocket and regain another glory.
